I have never heard anyone complain about a 24.1MP Canon R3 that cost the same when it came out. This happens to be the first ever camera (commercially) with a global shutter - every pixel is read out at the same time. No rolling shutter artifacts.

The flash sync speed is unbelievable on this compared to the 1/200s on the R3.

These features will eventually show up in lower cost bodies. Until then, the camera is just for those who can justify the cost... and there are plenty of those folks if you frequent any of the US pro forums.

Not sure a dynamic range of 8 stops is accurate. The Z9 & R3 have substantially better.

When viewed in isolation, you may be right. Pause a minute and soak in the implications. The A1(2) is due in 2024. Will that have a global shutter? What will that cost ? 7000/8000 USD ? You see where this going?

This camera brings in a lot of improvements for sports and action shooters. Consider someone shooting a baseball match: Pre-capture at 120fps means that the photographer will not miss the decisive moment of the bat meeting the ball. However, this necessitates an electronic shutter, which till now meant a rolling shutter, and hence unacceptable distortion for professional use.

Similarly, distortion-free 4K video while panning quickly will also gladden a lot of hearts. No more jello effect is a big deal, especially if you use long focal lengths such as with birds.

Btw the 8 stop figure is for image stabilisation, which can be achieved even with non-OSS lenses now. That is really something for low light photography and handheld videography.

Sci-fi specs!

I'm sure this camera will be a great expensive toy to some, and a justifiable-cost tool to some. It would remain a dream to most of us, even if we would have real-life use for some of its features. Top of my wish list would be silent-shutter  photography in the weirdest of artificial lights with no banding. I wish I could use electronic shutter on the cameras I have, but it is just not usable in the situations where I'd want it.

It's certainly a Desirable Object!
