My 2 cents is check some of the nifty plastic fantastic SLR's from Canon or Nikon. I have two Canon EOS 300 bought for about 1200 each almost 5 years back, pair it with a nifty fifty and you are all set. These two brands because you can still get native mount lenses with auto focus. I do not have anything against the mechanical SLR's, but they have become really expensive now a days. A mechanical SLR is a worthy investment but these plastic SLR cameras can be had for very less, so you can just replace if they conk out.

I agree with the SLR recommendation. Also pick up an SLR that allows you to autofocus, like say the Nikon F100. That way as you keep building your lens collection up, assuming that you would be picking up autofocus lenses, they would be useful as and when you shoot with DSLR or mirrorless systems. As my experience goes, eventually investment in lens becomes much more than in the body for most.

Just go with SLRs. Point and shoots are more of a  trendy thing and won't give you any control over your photos and spending that much on film where you don't have control is an expensive adventure.
