These are easy to use powerful manual falshes that I still use. No nonsense set up and just shoot.

Just to help with market pricing you can get one for around 4 to 6k. These were once very famous and recommended for single pin manual flash considering they won't dry your camera and has decen gn number as well.

Light quality is similar to modern and refresh times are decent.

At 10 to 12K one can get a godox flash with more modern bells and whistles but 285hv is an excellent manual flash and I use it even for wildlife.

It is not an issue of preference but rather the lack market research. This was a popular flash for advanced and pro users during it's time but in the current market for old used flashes, there are a plethora of options it has to compete with which wasn't the case during the age of film.
Modern flashes generate bright white light , whereas the older ones generate a slight warm light. there is a tradition of using warm light in case of films - old photographers preferred this, thus this particular flash was famous. also, it has several power throughput. Now, if anyone wishes to go old school or latest availability - that's a personal choice not lack of market research.

A Nikon SB-800 will give you higher output, ability to use Nikon remote flash system if you have a Nikon body with TTL (which includes wireless capabilities) and has a thyristor sensor for the rest; all the while being lighter, smaller...
