Hello everyone I m manas studing medicine. For past 2 yr i m trying to improve my photography skills and come to know I m good at monochrome street photography. I take them using digital zoom on mobile. Yes I use mobile (pixel8a) and sometime I use a decade old coolpix s3300. But now I want to do it in more professional way. So I'm searching for camera and now I can't decide which type of camera should I buy?
My style - monochrome street and documentary type
Shooting style - I prefer distance and use zoom for framing and then capture the shot. Going near subject just increase my heart rate.
Now, should I buy a old bulky dslr and a good lens, mirror less or point and shoot like rx100 which is easy to carry.
Condition- I m a student so I don't go regularly for hunting, but I want them to carry with me and take pics invisible way.
Experts plz help me
These are some of my work. I'm unable to upload raw files (dng format)
The RX100 is inconspicuous and has a good image quality despite being tiny. You should try it out to see if it suits your purpose.
If it doesn't work for you, an APS-C mirrorless with a small zoom lens (like the Sony pancake 16-50mm) could be your ticket. Later you can add a bigger zoom lens if it's necessary.
I you like to keep a distance, a crop frame mirrorless with a 35mm/50mm can be your starting point or a zoom lens if you are still figuring out your distance.
Once you start carrying the camera, friends and colleagues will ask you to take their group pictures also :D
You will need a wide angle then. Those group photos will be in low light space or indoor and then you will think about getting a flash and then you will spiral into the hole of photography gear :D
RX100 is a gem, but value for money, especially for a student? I'm not so sure about that.
Sony APS-C camera with Tamron 17-70/2.8 zoom will take you a long way! You don't have to shell out for latest models. I think a6700 is over 1 lakh still: look at previous generations, used. IIIRC, a6000, a6300, a6500 are first generation; a6100 etc are 2nd generation; a6700 is latest (although a couple of years old now.
I shoot classical concerts with my a7iv, but my a6500&17-70 is still my easy-carry travel camera.
