Nikon Zf + F-mount Voigtländer lenses via FTZ II — looking for firsthand experiences
Hi everyone,
I currently use Nikon D5200 and D60 bodies and am considering moving to the full-frame Nikon Zf. I enjoy manual focusing and would like to continue using my F-mount Voigtländer lenses with the FTZ II adapter:
- Voigtländer 20mm SL/SL II
- Voigtländer 40mm f/2 SL II S
- Voigtländer Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL II
I'd appreciate feedback from anyone who has used these lenses, or similar Voigtländer F-mount lenses, on the Zf.
1. Compatibility and lens recognition
Do these lenses mount and work properly through the FTZ II? Are there differences between SL, SL II and SL II S versions, particularly regarding electronic contacts, lens recognition and EXIF information? Is any manual lens-data setup required?
2. Metering and exposure modes
Does exposure metering work reliably? Which of the P, S, A and M modes are supported, and are there any limitations compared with using these lenses on a Nikon DSLR?
3. Aperture control
On my D5200, I set the lens aperture ring to its smallest aperture/highest f-number and control aperture from the camera. Does the same arrangement work on the Zf through the FTZ II? Can the lens's aperture ring be used instead, and what functionality changes if it is?
4. Stopped-down viewing and EVF brightness
When selecting f/8 or f/11, does the lens remain physically stopped down while composing, or does the camera keep it open until the exposure? Does the EVF become noticeably darker or noisier, especially indoors? How do exposure-preview settings affect this?
Would I need to focus with the aperture open and then stop down, or is focusing directly at the shooting aperture practical?
5. Manual-focus assistance
How useful and accurate are focus peaking and magnification with these lenses, particularly the 58mm at f/1.4? Does the focus point change colour to confirm focus? Does subject/eye detection provide useful focusing assistance with this setup?
I expect focusing to remain manual with the FTZ II; I'm interested in which electronic focusing aids actually work.
6. Stabilisation
Does the Zf's in-body stabilisation work correctly with these adapted lenses? Is focal length recognised automatically, or must it be entered manually? How useful is it in everyday handheld shooting?
7. Image quality and full-frame coverage
Have you noticed any adapter-related issues with sharpness, infinity focus, alignment or vignetting? How do these lenses perform towards the edges and corners on the Zf compared with their results on a DX body?
I'm also looking forward to using their full-frame angles of view rather than the tighter framing on my D5200.
8. Everyday handling and the upgrade experience
Does the FTZ II make these small lenses feel awkward or front-heavy on the Zf? For anyone who moved from a DSLR, is the EVF a substantial improvement for precise manual focusing, including in low light?
Would you recommend keeping these F-mount lenses for the Zf, or have you found meaningful practical advantages in switching to native Z-mount Voigtländers?
Please mention the exact lens version and adapter you use. Sample photographs, recommended settings and any unexpected limitations would be very helpful.
Thanks!
I wonder if this helps
