Hi everyone.

I'm thinking of getting myself a mint/new FF Nikon body. I've narrowed it down to the D780 and D850. D850 is first preference but price is too high for new copy. What do you reckon should be the current market price of a mint/excellent used copy of D850? The used prices outside this forum I've checked seem a little too high but most importantly, will have anxiety 24/7 as I can't trust their claims without worry.

I'm keeping D780 as secondary option if the D850 is unattainable. Hoping to get some insights on the matter. Thanks!
Shoot stuff I guess?

At this time,  I would guess that used D850 prices will be high. It is still is and is likely to remain (for a while) a very mainstream camera.
Possibly, with the coming of the Nikon Z8 you may see a few D850s on sale on this forum before long. If you aren't in hurry, wait a bit for that to start.I don't know what you photograph but, if the wait and cost is too much, I think the D780 is a very good camera body.

As regards the price - that is something very difficult to accurately pin down because of individual camera conditions, wear & tear,  shutter count and so on.
On this forum I have often seen the same camera model posted for sale by different owners  priced differently for some of the reasons mentioned above.

If the condition of the camera vis a vis the reliability of sellers is causing you concern, recommend "see before you buy", handle the item, before you shell out your money.

Finally - what's the big deal with "mint" condition? IMHO the description "mint condition" can accurately only be applied to cameras unused, brand new, just bought, from the shop.

Makes sense to wait if the new Z8 has come out. If I find and excellent copy for (less than 40k SC) around 1.2L, might go for it rather than wait.

'Mint Condition' term gets thrown around freely outside this forum. It actually damages the sellers reputation for labeling item as 'mint' when you can clearly see wear/usage marks.

Go for a new 780 if you don't care about the layout of the D8XX series. The 780 is a very capable camera in the right hands. I was used to a 8xx layout so went for a 850 new as the old ones did not instill a lot of confidence as most of them had some minor issue or something. I decided to remain with a DSLR over a Mirrorless as imo the AF of a mirrorless is still not as mature as a totl DSLR especially for wildlife in disturbing backgrounds. Plus I am very well entrenched in to the F system especially long lenses to justify an adapter for using them on Z bodies even though things are getting better day by day as far as performance of these lenses on Z bodies is concerned. Maybe in a generation or 2, the AF will have attained better performance over current totl DSLRs and a few Z long lenses will compel me to go a Z camera till then I am firmly on the DSLR band wagon especially for my use case.

You should be able to get one around 85K (give or take a few thousands) depending on the physical condition, shutter count and residual warranty, if any. There is no foolproof method of guaranteeing anything when you buy a used camera. However if you buy from a trusted/reputed source with the usual due diligence, it should turn out fine in all probability. Thankfully this risk is much lower for DSLRs than it is for mirrorless bodies since they are not favoured for professional video work.

The D850 is a lot of camera for the money. Interest is likely to remain high in near future since it is the most advanced prosumer DSLR manufactured by Nikon before it stops making DSLRs. The advantage with a top end model like D850 is that you not only get a very good deal price wise but also get to reap the benefit of getting lenses on the cheap with plummeting prices.

That said if any company has made a compelling case for migrating to mirrorless in recent times, it is Nikon. They have released a slew of lenses and bodies at very attractive prices in a very short time. Except for shooting action (totally agree with @mannusingh on this) or shooting APSC (the Z series APSC cameras are terribly overpriced and underfeatured, especially compared to their F mount brethren), they have a very good stable for most anything else. So if you intend to shoot mostly in 24-100mm range, opting for a Z series FF gives you futureproofing and better video capability (in case its important to you).

You might have to rule out the D780. While its an excellent camera, there just arent too many copies floating out there (it was released in COVID era during mirrorless invasion), so chances of getting one for a fair price are very much on the lower side.
YO, YO, YO ! Seven-Zero-Zero to the 0 to the 5 to the 4 - representin' the K-O-L. What up, B-Yatch? Leave the phone.
