I want the best image quality for my work on display at minimum size.

In that case even resize algorithm matters a lot. Try this file and resize  in PS using various algorithms like bicubic etc and see what happen...

Thanks for the replies guys. As of now I am using file size of under 720px on the longer side. Please have a look at my website:
www.blankslate.in
is the size and quality ratio optimum? I use a laptop and wondering how it will look on desktops and large laptops. Comments and critics are heartily welcome..
regards.

initially i put in carousal over there. but it was bugging the site, so thought to keep it minimalistic. So the blankslate is left as a homepage, which i thought won't look undeveloped. is it looking annoying or incomplete?. If it won't look very bad, i will keep it blank..
photos are under portfolio.. Have a look if you didn't yet. Comment and Criticize please..

smaller the better, but I prefer a 450px or 500px height for landscape orientation and 700px height for vertical orientation. it gives very small sizes around 50 kb to 100 kb.

Here's yet another 'Image Resizer' utility. This one is from Microsoft which uses the convenience of the 'right click drop down menu' but the size may not be as small as what Toofan has accomplished. It works with Windows 7 too.

Visit this website:-  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows/xp-downloads#2TC=powertoys  You will be presented with this (Screenshot)
[The instructions in the screenshot below are self explanatory. Save the .exe file and install it].

Open any picture which has a large size and right click on it. Observe that in the drop down menu you will have an option - 'Resize Pictures' . Click on it.

A window will be presented as shown below. You can choose what suits you. For this demo I have chosen 'Large'. Click 'OK'.

Another similar picture will be created in the same folder and you will also see (Large) in its name. Using 'Properties' from the right click menu confirm the size. [This picture was reduced to 385 KB from 7.56 MB].

A 'Small' sized picture will be 136 KB and a 'Medium' sized picture will be 244 KB.

Use the 'reduced size' picture to post in the Forum.
