It was taken in Shantiniketan, WB.

I am not an expert on the species, it looks like 'Kaash phool' to me. I am not sure if the season (late winter, February) is wrong for that.

Thank you for saying 'surreal'. It is very satisfying to see that you chose a word which was playing in my mind when I was lucky to experience that setting :) .

Interesting suggestion, I considered this too.

Not the exact same composition, but here is a similar one where I did try it out.

IIRC, my thinking was that with those bright flowers filling 30% of the frame in the OP, the detail in the bright areas would grab all the attention, since I could not get my frame full of birds perfectly silhouetted against them. In the image below, OTOH, since I have more distant dark bg to work with, a high contrast BW does not cause the bg to interfere with the subjects.
