Colour vs. B/W

Surprisingly, the B&W image stands out. The play of light and shadows has a lot to say.

Thank you friends for your valueable feedback and appreciation. In Pentax Users forum,UK more likes went to B/W. I,too, like b/w for its dramatic impact.

I like both images but the B&W stands out more.

The reasons are usual, the simplification of BW leave less competing elements in the image and allow me to focus on the texture, a mystery about what time of day the image was taken etc.

In the colour image, the interesting sky is also competing for attention. This is not a bad thing if this was intended. OTOH, at least two hillocks in the middle-ground (the rolling once in the centre and the triangular one to the left) draw my attention because of their brightness in the colour one, but do not catch my attention at all in the BW one.

All in all, it appears that if only the snowclad hill and its texture was your intented focus area for your viewers, the BW works better. OTOH if you wanted the attention to be divided between the sky, other elements and the hillface, then the colour one works better.

Colour immediately catches the eye more than the BW. By the way, both are excellent.

Well, they are... different.

There is graduation, contrast and detail in the BW that is less in the colour pic, although some clouds are lost in the heavier vignetting of the BW. So I think that the post-processing intent has more difference than just the absence of colour.

They are different works of art. Wonderful pics.
