Title: How To: Posting Images from Flickr onto the Forum
Post by: toofan on August 22, 2011, 08:21:00 PM
Minimizing the Image Size & Posting from New Flickr to Forum. Modified 8.05.14

Friends,
I had seen that many beginners in this forum Posts Large size jpegs which take both time and bandwidth to open. So this is my image saving work flow. Hope it will help someone.

This is based on Photoshop.

1. after processing, save the full size if you wish.
2. Resize by pressing Ctrl+ Alt + I.
3. Add the Minimal of Border if you wish. other wise a white/black stroke will do the job from Edit menu.
4. Merge all layers by pressing Shift + Ctrl + E.
4. From file menu select save for web devices. or Press Alt + Shift + Ctrl + S.
    a) Select Jpeg.
    b) Quality to 60%
    c) Select only Optimized.
    d) Leave Pregressive, Embed Color Profile, unchecked.
    e) Select Convert to sRGB.
    f) Select any preview type you wish.
    g) Select Metadata you want to embed with file.
    h) You could resize from here also, resize if you haven't done yet.
    i) Click Save.

Approx Image size you get. all sizes in px

1. 600  x 400 = 29.7-35 Kb (Standard Web size, I guess Ayaz uses this size, earlier I too post these size.)
2. 750 x 500 = 40-50 Kb (For Portraits and landscapes best size to post online of 500 px height)
3. 900 x 600 = 51-70 kb ( Macros or your shots has some fine details, Large size landscapes could also be posted this size)
4. 1050 x 700 = 65-90 kb (Detailed Macros, Mind your image will not be seen full in browser window and user has to scroll it. so avoid using this size)
5. 1200 x 800 = 80 - 120 kb (If you want to show very fine details in macros, Mind your image will not be seen full in browser window and user has to scroll it. so avoid using this size)
6. 2700 x 1800 = around 280-300 kb.  ( Never Post such sizes online, your Images will be stolen)

For cropositions, Always keep the Height of Image in mind. for height more then 600px generally user has to scroll the browser widow and not able to view the image at one go.

Post Small, And save time and bandwidth.

Please feel free to correct me as this is totally my exp. and thinking.

Guys here the steps for sharing image from New Flickr.

1. Click over the image.

@ Vimal - I second that!

@ Vijay - I can't take shots like this, but I can answer that question. Insects have compound eyes - so literally a cluster of a many, many, many eyes that their brain then processes as a single image. One can't see that normally, but at this magnification one is able to see the hundreds of 'eyes'.

For those who do not have Photoshop (or don't wanna get into it), some nice freeware alternatives are: Paint.net and Gimp. While Paint.net is very similar to PhotoShop in it's appearance and easy enough to use, Gimp can appear to be very daunting at the beginning.

When converting images for posting in forums/galleries, I use Google Picasa a lot. It can be configured to save to a predetermine filesize and features adjustable quality. Saving the images in reduced size is as easy as selecting the ones you want and clicking on the 'Export' button at the bottom.

I have no idea of Picasa I uploaded some images long time ago and lost them for ever.

Also a bump for encouraging the use of low resolution/size files.

Very well captured image Vimal.  I'm keen to know about the lens.
You have outlined a very useful topic for beginners who upload heavy files.

There is an online alternative for people who do not have Photoshop: Yahoo's Smush.it -> http://smush.it (http://smush.it)

Vimal Sir,

I too have a Nikkor 50mm f1.8 lens.. but I could never capture something like this... I just want to know how close you went to the subject.. and is the image a cropped one? I was wondering how could an insect be so steady for such a long time??
Please enlighten me!!
Title: Re: Minimizing the Image Size.
Post by: toofan on October 27, 2011, 09:39:32 AM
Getting close to the subject depends upon the setup I use, but mostly between 5 to 10 cms.

This shot is made early in the morning with the help of flash. Most of the bugs are slow to move at mornings. And patience is the key. Keep practising. it took time to me also.

If you can lay flat down on ground it will make you more steady and help in easy focussing. I am also a learner just like you.
In macro photogarphy, Sir is mainly used for the RAM (Image), Mr Arnab (Naturecloseup), Udayan, Dr Anand and some more legends. So next time you could call me only Vimal. I will be at ease. thanks.

Very impressive work done here.

I know 50mm can produce a great picture, i guess you miss something that was attached to that 50mm here.  ;).

What was it?...ET or Raynox.

Thats a good info.. But I am struggling with finding a solution for myself. I am developing my website to showcase my photo works.
i am struggling it to give a size. I read a lot about this and no where i get the satisfactory answer.. some says keep the best resolutions others says keep it very low.
I want the best image quality for my work on display at minimum size. i used 1080-720 size but it seems very slow as i opted for best quality. I used a software called fast stone photo resizer which i found to be good (any idea?)
I am not scared of getting my photos stolen(downloaded) but want a fast access by the viewers and give them best image quality...

to put in simply..
how much??

Image size -- In width and height

Image size-- in kb??

quality--??

i used the best quality and size 1080-720 and sizes are around 300-400kb.
any help will be appreciated..

thanks

Use 60% quality with the option of save for web (if that available in that software). This will surely reduce the size. Also a 600px size would be sufficient for image viewing.

I want the best image quality for my work on display at minimum size.

In that case even resize algorithm matters a lot. Try this (http://ifile.it/y93e20g/Rings1.gif) file and resize  in PS using various algorithms like bicubic etc and see what happen...

Thanks for the replies guys. As of now I am using file size of under 720px on the longer side. Please have a look at my website:
www.blankslate.in
is the size and quality ratio optimum? I use a laptop and wondering how it will look on desktops and large laptops. Comments and critics are heartily welcome..
regards.

is the home page kept blank on purpose ? so as to portray a BLANK SLATE ?

initially i put in carousal over there. but it was bugging the site, so thought to keep it minimalistic. So the blankslate is left as a homepage, which i thought won't look undeveloped. is it looking annoying or incomplete?. If it won't look very bad, i will keep it blank..
photos are under portfolio.. Have a look if you didn't yet. Comment and Criticize please..

smaller the better, but I prefer a 450px or 500px height for landscape orientation and 700px height for vertical orientation. it gives very small sizes around 50 kb to 100 kb.

Here's yet another 'Image Resizer' utility. This one is from Microsoft which uses the convenience of the 'right click drop down menu' but the size may not be as small as what Toofan has accomplished. It works with Windows 7 too.

Visit this website:-  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows/xp-downloads#2TC=powertoys  You will be presented with this (Screenshot)
[The instructions in the screenshot below are self explanatory. Save the .exe file and install it].

Open any picture which has a large size and right click on it. Observe that in the drop down menu you will have an option - 'Resize Pictures' . Click on it.

A window will be presented as shown below. You can choose what suits you. For this demo I have chosen 'Large'. Click 'OK'.

Another similar picture will be created in the same folder and you will also see (Large) in its name. Using 'Properties' from the right click menu confirm the size. [This picture was reduced to 385 KB from 7.56 MB].

A 'Small' sized picture will be 136 KB and a 'Medium' sized picture will be 244 KB.

Use the 'reduced size' picture to post in the Forum.

TIP for constraining image size on this forum . Use following code ( remove spaces when you post)

[ img width=700 ] url.jpg [ /img ]
