You are exactly right, I suspect.  Many of us started out with cameras which showed us, after some use, what the upline features could do for us.  I suspect that a little outdoor photography in harsh sunlight flaring the viewing screen will impart an appreciation for a viewfinder that is immune from that limitation.  It's all part of learning and growing into the hobby.
