I'm looking to build a setup for top down shots on a table. I have got a C stand with a boom arm for Canon R6 camera and rf 50mm 1.8 lens.

Came to https://www.designinfo.in/p/sunwayfoto-xb-28ii-low-profile-double-panning-ball-head-with-pt-37-head/ this ball head, but it doesnt have a dring on the plate and I never carry coins with me.

1. In all probability the ball head will have a set of one or two Allen (L) keys supplied with the kit. If not, they are easily available - every photographer should have a few IMHO.

2. Why depend upon the QR plate supplied by the head? Get your own custom sized (of various sizes) Arca-Swiss QR plate from Leofoto /Sunway / Andoer / Hiffen / Wimberley etc. That way the plate can be permanently screwed on the camera and and will require tightening /loosening only when you remove it.  Another thing that not just product photogs but all photogs must have.

3. QR plates tightened using an Allen key are safer because you cannot ever (using your hand) exert the torque required to securely tighten a D-ring. This is particularly relevant since you intend to suspend the set up over the table, and not sitting on a tripod where gravity secures you even with the odd loose fitment.

I can't keep the plate attached to the camera as I also use holfast harness, which requires to have its own screw attached to the camera.

I have allen keys but the point is to carry as few things possible.

Quote from: Monster on March 24, 2026, 02:48:07 PMI have used this with a clamp and magic arm earlier but it is quite cumbersome to fix and adjust the alignment with the table.

Correct me if I am wrong but i feel if I use a ball mount on the boom arm, it will be more precise and easier for repeated setups.

I'm not much of a tripod user. Have two, and a monopod, because, hey, it's stuff photographers buy, right? lol. ;)

But this I do know: I detest ball heads. Previously, tripods used to come with pan/tilt heads. They were very easy to use: you can accurately hold one dimension whilst moving in another. This is not possible with a ball head. I do not see how it would help you to do repeated setups.

Some pan/tilt heads grew up to become geared heads. For precision and predictability, that might be your baby. But it would be a much bigger investment.

Hi,

I'm looking to build a setup for top down shots on a table. I have got a C stand with a boom arm for Canon R6 camera and rf 50mm 1.8 lens.

I have used this with a clamp and magic arm earlier but it is quite cumbersome to fix and adjust the alignment with the table.

Correct me if I am wrong but i feel if I use a ball mount on the boom arm, it will be more precise and easier for repeated setups.

Now initially  my web search led me to K&F concept BH-28L model( 28mm is the ball size, there are other variants upto 36mm size) but a review showed that on one side the plate screw and the ball knob  ram into eeach other while tightening, so I tried searching for other heads which create less frictions in setup.

Came to https://www.designinfo.in/p/sunwayfoto-xb-28ii-low-profile-double-panning-ball-head-with-pt-37-head/ this ball head, but it doesnt have a dring on the plate and I never carry coins with me.

Gemini suggested Benro B2 which is quite expensive than the benchmark I started my search with.

I am looking for advice from the experienced members here, if there's any other model that is more suited for my needs, or there's any point which I am missing in this thought process. I want to have a solution which doesnt bother me in making videos everytime I attempt to.
